Historic Preservation Options
Do you own a property with historic significance? Are you interested in preserving it? Huntington’s Historic Review Board is excited to let you know about the historic preservation options available to you.
National Register of Historic Places
Being listed is a prestigious honor and may qualify your property for federal (commercial) and state (residential) preservation tax credits. However, this designation does not prevent changes or demolition. Seven National Register districts within the City encompass more than 465 acres and contain about 1,600 structures.
Local Designation
Local designation offers legal protection against unsanctioned alterations or demolition. The Historic Review Board, under Chapter 153 of the City Code, can designate both individual sites and districts.

Preservation Easements
A preservation easement is a private legal agreement — often with a nonprofit like Indiana Landmarks — that ensures the property's historical and architectural character is preserved. This protection applies even after ownership changes.
