Building Code Administration

The Department, through the Building Commissioner, is responsible for administering the Building Code for construction and remodeling projects within the City of Huntington. Permits are required and help the City enforce safety standards to protect life, health, property, and public welfare. This ensures construction is safe for you and your family.

The City’s Building Code includes six separate codes: Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Fence, Demolition, and Unsafe Building standards. These are outlined in Title XV, Chapter 150 of the City of Huntington Code of Ordinances. The local code also incorporates the minimum requirements established by the State of Indiana's Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission.

Department staff develop these codes, which are approved at both the state and local levels. The Building Commissioner serves as the chief administrator of the Building Code. Staff also provide guidance to property owners, contractors, and design professionals regarding code requirements.

The Department’s trained and certified professionals stay up to date with evolving standards and best practices through regular training, continuing education, and membership in professional organizations, including the International Code Council (ICC) and the Indiana Association of Building Officials (IABO).
