Activities & Events

Volunteer Tree Planting and Mulching
8:30 to 10 a.m.

Join other volunteers starting at 8:30 a.m. to plant native trees on the arboretum grounds and mulch existing trees to support their long-term health and growth. The Purdue Extension Master Gardeners will start the day with a hands-on tree planting and mulching demonstration for volunteers. Volunteers should dress appropriately; wearing gloves is recommended. | Sign Up to Volunteer


Official Arbor Day Proclamation
10 a.m.

Mayor Strick will make an official Arbor Day proclamation. To show your support of environmental stewardship, sign a copy of the proclamation, which will be displayed at the city building the following week.


Seedling Giveaway
10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (while supplies last)

Learn more about the arboretum with a fun scavenger hunt and receive a free tree seedling to plant at home. Seedlings provided by the Indiana DNR, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and State Sen. Andy Zay’s office.


Live Music and Concessions
10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Enjoy live music with members of the Dead Pickers Society from 10 a.m. to noon. Purchase food cooked on the “Man Grill” courtesy of Chant Thompson. Food will be available for purchase until 1 p.m. 


Painted Rain Barrel Silent Auction
10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Conserve water and save money using a rain barrel for your yard or garden. Bid on a rain barrel uniquely designed by local artists. Bids will be taken until 12:30 p.m., with winning bids to be announced at 12:45 p.m. Winners may take their barrel with them or pick it up from the Parks Department building at 634 Webster St. the following week. Barrels provided by Huntington County Soil and Water Conservation District and G&G Peppers. 


Tree ID Walk
10:15 a.m.

Learn the tips and tricks to identifying native Indiana trees on a guided walk through the arboretum with a certified Master Naturalist and Master Gardener.


Nature Crafts
10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The entire family is invited to make crafts using materials found in nature. Paint wood cookies, decorate a walking stick or create a pinecone bird feeder. 


Nature Immersion Walk
11 a.m.

Connect with nature on a therapeutic walk in the woods led by a certified forest therapy guide. Meet at the pavilion at 11 a.m. to begin your guided walk. Nature immersion walks will last approximately 45 minutes.


Community Exhibitors
10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Visit with organizations from around the community to learn about opportunities to participate in environmental stewardship and outdoor recreation. Exhibitors include: Little River Wetlands Project, Master Gardeners, Huntington City-Township Public Library, Clark’s Recycling, Huntington County Disc Golf, the City of Huntington Parks Departments and the Tree Board.


Live Raptor Demonstration
Noon (weather permitting)

Experience a live raptor demonstration with naturalists from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Salamonie Interpretive and Nature Center.


Community Woodchip Pilot

Are you interested in woodchips for your yard or garden? Would you like them made available at the Arbor Day celebration? We need your feedback! The City of Huntington is looking to pilot a program to make woodchips available for residents. Click here to complete a short questionnaire.
