Huntington's Tree Ordinance: What You Need to Know

Chapter 102 of the City of Huntington Code outlines how we care for trees and vegetation in our community – keeping our neighborhoods green, safe, and beautiful. Here’s a quick guide to the responsibilities shared between property owners and the City.

Read Code

City Responsibilities

Planting & Maintenance on Public Property: The City maintains trees in spaces like city parks, street medians, and, in certain instances, public rights-of-way.

Tree Removal (Public Spaces): The City removes hazardous or dead trees within a public right-of-way or on public property.

Permits & Inspections: The City oversees permits for property owners who want to plant, prune, or remove trees in public rights-of-way.

Urban Forestry Oversight: The City Tree Board helps plan and promote responsible tree management citywide.

Property Owner Responsibilities

Care for Trees Near Their Property: Property owners should maintain trees that are within or overhang sidewalks, alleys, and rights-of-way adjacent to their property – this includes pruning for clearance and visibility.

Report Hazardous Trees: Property owners should notify the City if a public tree becomes dangerous or diseased.

Permit for Major Work: Planting, removing, or substantially trimming a tree in a public right-of-way requires a permit from the City.

Working Together

By sharing the care of our urban trees, we create a vibrant and more resilient Huntington. Whether you’re planting a tree or just enjoying their shade, thank you for helping us grow a healthy tree canopy for all.
