Sunken Gardens/Shakespeare Gardens
About This Location
Sunken Gardens and Shakespeare Gardens were originally dedicated to Huntington in 1924. The gardens flourished for many years until time and limited funding led to their decline. From 1964 to 1967, the city initiated a restoration project to return them to their original beauty.
Sunken Gardens, an enchanting space created from an old abandoned stone quarry, features graceful fieldstone footbridges that span a U-shaped pond, and stone stairways that lead visitors to the gardens below. The quarry's natural rough-hewn stone walls create a living amphitheater, which architects incorporated into the design of the ponds, walkways, and gardens. During the winter season, a festive Christmas light display attracts thousands of visitors.
