Preserving & Protecting Sunken Gardens for the Next 101 Years
First dedicated in 1924, Sunken Gardens is now 101 years old. Its last major restoration was nearly 60 years ago. Tree roots and invasive plants have begun to threaten the stone walls’ structure, prompting essential preservation work.
As a results, parts of the Gardens may look different over the coming months. Treatment and removal is scheduled to begin on or around September 29, weather permitting.
Two invasive tree species will be treated using basal bark treatment – a method recommended by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture and State of Indiana Cooperative Invasives Management. This involves applying a solution to the base of the trees that works slowly over many weeks, allowing us to remove them safely while ensuring they are unable to regrow.
The careful process is expected to last well into 2026.
Thank you for your patience and support as we restore and protect this historic space for future generations.

Shakespeare Gardens
We're designing a new Shakespeare Gardens in collaboration with the local Shakespeare club. Plants and flowers selected for the new gardens will be a nod to some of Shakespeare's most famous works.
We're also adding an interactive code-breaking activity honoring Huntington-native Elizebeth Smith Friedman, whose cryptology techniques were used by military officers to break codes during World War I.
Alongside volunteers, the Parks & Recreation Department will plant the garden in the spring and summer of 2026. It will be located on the corner of Dimond and W. Park Drive on the east side of Sunken Gardens.
