Lafontaine Street Closed at W. Park Drive for LTCP Work

LTCP Detour Map

This map shows the various routes you can take to avoid the closure at the Lafontaine and West Park Drive intersection. Rolling closures along Tipton Street will also continue as utilities must be relocated for upcoming construction in the area.

There will be access to all local businesses throughout this sewer separation/installation project. Thank you for doing your part to continue backing and supporting Huntington businesses!

The ongoing work is a crucial part of fulfilling the City’s obligations under the federally mandated Long-Term Control Project. This project is of utmost importance as it aims to prevent waste and pollution from spilling into our rivers and streams during heavy rainfall or snowmelt in Huntington’s century-old combined sewer system.

A few additional notes and reminders:

1. We are currently working with the contractor to verify information on when the State and Lafontaine intersection and bridge can reopen. The nature of the work (excavating 20-plus feet of limestone and bedrock to reach the required sewer depth) makes progress slow and less predictable. We will provide further updates as soon as we are able.

2. Tipton Street was due to be reconstructed regardless of the necessary sewer project. Thank you to the city’s engineering team and contractors for finding a solution to address both simultaneously!

3. Please slow down and drive with extra caution in all work areas.

Lafontaine & W Park Drive Closure

HUNTINGTON -- Lafontaine Street will be closed at West Park Drive for the federally mandated Long-Term Control Plan sewer project. This will last into the summer, as crews must excavate through 20 to 30 feet of limestone to reach the required depth. It can be a slow process, and we thank everyone for their patience and understanding!

The work route will turn east when it reaches Tipton Street. In the meantime we have a few reminders about what to expect with this project. Its once-in-a-generation scope will undoubtedly cause headaches and disruptions, which we are working hard to communicate and mitigate as much as possible.

1. The full project is expected to last through the end of fall, perhaps into wintertime. Work areas will be secured nightly to ensure access to residents’ homes along the work route. Street parking will be limited at various times, and streets will close as necessary to complete construction.

2. Progress will be slow at times. Crews must excavate through up to 30 feet of limestone to reach the required sewer line depth. One 25-foot-long section of pipe per day can be considered good progress in limestone-heavy areas.

3. Again, these are deep trenches. Please keep your distance for safety! Each section will be completed and filled in before the next is excavated. This not only helps ensure safety but also minimizes the impact of closures.

4. Many trees had to be removed along the work route (Lafontaine, Tipton and Division streets). After construction, new trees will be replanted on at least a 1:1 basis as near as possible to their original locations.

5. All sidewalks that have been temporarily replaced with gravel will ultimately be rebuilt. Complete street reconstruction and new curbs are also planned on the work route.
