Community Crossings Grant Spurs 2023 Street Paving, Trail Connection

The City of Huntington is announcing a Community Crossings matching grant award of more than $789,000 from the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Huntington is one of 224 Indiana cities, towns and counties to receive a combined $133.4 million in state matching grants in this round of funding. These dollars are used across Indiana to strengthen local transportation networks. Two rounds of state funding are awarded each year in the spring and fall.

Locally, the $789,996 grant Huntington received will be used toward street resurfacing around Huntington and road improvements in support of the planned Erie Rail Trail Connection. The City of Huntington uses a system called PASER to rate and prioritize road maintenance needs.

Alongside the Erie Rail Trail Connection, the City will be reconstructing part of Stults Road and its intersections with Gragg Street and 500 N to improve pedestrian safety. The City also will upgrade stormwater drainage in the area and resurface the length of 500 N.

We look forward to continuing work on the new trail section connecting the current Gragg Street trailhead to Crestview Middle School, Parkview Hospital and the Huntington YMCA. Construction is anticipated to begin in April 2024.

We want to repeat our thanks to the Huntington Area Recreational Trails Association, or HARTA, for raising donations and securing grants that made the planned trail section possible.
