Riverfront Development District
The Riverfront Development District helps support dining, redevelopment and welcoming riverfront spaces for the community.
Encouraging Growth and New Development
Huntington’s Riverfront Development District was created to encourage thoughtful growth and new economic activity along the city’s waterways. The district includes areas near the Little River, Flint Creek, Rabbit Run and nearby corridors, and is designed to support development that adds energy and investment to our riverfront areas.
One key benefit of locating within the district is the opportunity for eligible food and beverage establishments to apply for a riverfront alcoholic beverage permit. These permits allow a qualifying establishment to serve beer, wine or liquor even if the city’s normal permit limits have already been reached. This makes it easier for new restaurants to open or for existing restaurants to expand in riverfront locations.
Applying for a Riverfront Permit
Owners of establishments located within the Riverfront Development District may apply for a riverfront alcoholic beverage permit through the City of Huntington’s local application process. Applications are reviewed by the Board of Public Works and Safety to confirm the business meets district requirements and operates in a way that supports the goals of the district.
Once approved locally, applications are forwarded to the Indiana Alcohol & Tobacco Commission for final review and issuance of the permit. Restaurant owners are encouraged to contact the City early to confirm eligibility, understand the application steps, and receive guidance throughout the process.
