Preliminary Resolution Passes to Review Potential Impacts of Solar Projects

20240429 Special Meeting

HUNTINGTON — The Huntington County Commissioners called a special meeting on Monday, April 29, to pass a preliminary resolution addressing citizens’ concerns about the potential for industrial solar projects in the county.

Each of the three commissioners – President Tom Wall, Vice President Terry Stoffel and Rob Miller– voted in favor of the resolution.

The resolution affords the Board of Commissioners more time to “further review the impact of large-scale solar projects and provide the citizens of the County with an opportunity to provide input” into their future in the county.

The Commissioners took action in response to Huntington County residents’ concerns over the potential use of farmland for industrial solar operations.

Next, amendments to Huntington County’s Zoning Ordinance will be considered to potentially limit:

  1. The acreage of farmland that may be converted to large-scale solar projects.
  2. The districts in which large-scale solar projects are permitted.
  3. The development standards applicable to large-scale solar projects.

The Commissioners will continue to meet with individuals and groups to hear their concerns and feedback.
