Huntington - Huntington Mayor Richard Strick held a ceremony today at 3 p.m. at Pathfinder Services officially proclaiming March as Disability Awareness Month.

In a ceremony in the lobby of Pathfinder Services North Campus at 2824 Theater Ave., Chief Operating Officer Carrie Blackham joined the mayor for the proclamation.

“This marks the 31st year of Indiana’s recognition of Disability Awareness Month,” said Mayor Strick. “With this proclamation, I am calling on our residents to observe this month by listening to and learning from our neighbors with disabilities to help them live meaningful and productive lives.”

Pathfinder Services and the City of Huntington are collaborating to celebrate Disability Awareness Month with several scheduled events.

“We are so thrilled to be partnering with the City of Huntington to recognize and celebrate people with disabilities in our community,” said Blackham. “Through recognition, we are promoting the inclusion and independence of all people.”

Today through Friday, March 12, is Spirit Week, with different colors representing different disabilities each day. Everyone is encouraged to wear yellow today to highlight Communication Disabilities, blue on Tuesday for Intellectual Disabilities, green on Wednesday for Psychological Disabilities, orange on Thursday for Physical Disabilities, and Purple every Friday in March for Disability Awareness Month in general.

Mayor Strick will be reading to the children at Pathfinder Kids Kampus on Friday, March 12, and then collaborating with artists on a project at Creative Abilities on Monday, March 15.
