Trick-or-treaters just may get their chance to mask up on Halloween.

Based on current COVID-19 data for Huntington County, the City of Huntington plans to have Trick-or-Treating from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, October 31.

According to Emily Schamehorn, public health nurse for Huntington County, trick-or-treaters should take some of the simple steps we’ve grown accustomed to in slowing COVID-19’s spread.

“First, wear a mask. It is Halloween, so that will be easy,” Schamehorn said.

She also advises trick-or-treaters to social distance “as much as possible,” sanitize hands often and avoid any large gatherings, especially indoors.

Residents who plan to accept trick-or-treaters should find ways to minimize contact. Rather than allowing trick-or-treaters to reach into a candy container, for example, Schamehorn instead suggests using tongs to place treats directly into their bags.

Huntington Police Chief Chad Hacker will present the City’s trick-or-treating plan to the Board of Public Works & Safety for consideration during an upcoming meeting at 3:30 p.m. October 5 in the City Council Chambers, located on the third floor of the Huntington City Building at 300 Cherry St. The Board of Public Works & Safety routinely reviews the city’s trick-or-treating plan each year.

Due to COVID-19 considerations, a final decision regarding citywide trick-or-treating will be made Tuesday, October 27, to allow time to adapt if county data at the time force any changes or cancellation.

Groups planning “Trunk or Treat” events or similar activities should coordinate COVID-19 safety plans with the Huntington County Health Department by calling (260) 358-4831.
