5 Ways to Reduce Water Usage

Helpful tips from the city of Huntington's Water Department.

1. Check for silent leaks. The city provides leak-detection tablets at no cost. Just add one to your toilet’s water tank and wait about 20 minutes (but don’t flush). If any color seeps into the toilet bowl, it means you have a leak.

2. Check your water softener. If it runs continuously, it may rack up a large bill. Have repairs made as needed.

3. Check faucets and hose spigots. That small, slow drip? It can waste 20 gallons of water every day. Again, make repairs as needed.

4. Install low-flow toilets. Traditional models use 3.5 gallons per flush on average. Low-flow models? Less than half at only 1.6 GPF.

5. Install a low-flow shower head and take shorter showers. Simple solutions are often the best. A low-flow shower head itself can use up to 50 percent less water.
