Big increase in building permits seen in 2016

News Brief: Sharp Increase in Aggregate Building Permit Value Indicates Significant Growth for City of Huntington

The City of Huntington reported a 168% increase in building permit values in 2016 when compared to 2015 values. Notable is that the increase in the number of building permits was only 4%. The spike in values is the result of multiple large projects happening simultaneously.

Bryn Keplinger, Director of Community Development & Redevelopment, said that the increase signals employment growth in Huntington, “This figure is very encouraging as it’s a pretty good indication that the last of the holdover effects from the recession are finally over.  For that many large investments to take place, it signals that employers are growing and that is validated by the record low unemployment numbers.”

Total value for building permits in 2016 was $27.3M versus $10.1M in 2015. The 2016 figure covers nearly 650 permits, including 12 projects valued at over $200,000 and 27 new single-family dwellings.
