Pictured from left to right are Officer Austin Johnson, Det. Captain Malcom Jones and Officer Daniel Lowes.

The Huntington Police Department and Huntington County Sheriff’s Office are announcing the return of the D.A.R.E. (Drug-Abuse-Resistance-Education) program back into the Huntington County Community School Corporation!

D.A.R.E. is the most comprehensive drug prevention and education program in the world.  It reaches over 1.5 million students annually.  Scientific studies and research based evaluations indicate a 32%-44% decrease in marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco use by students exposed to the D.A.R.E. program.  The curriculum is proven to be comprehensive, evidence based, and systematic.  It is designed to be taught by local law enforcement officers who will be recognized in their community by the students they lead for years to come.  The officers are carefully selected and highly trained to assure their continued dedication to the students of our community.

After a thorough selection process, we are pleased to announce the following officers have been selected to serve in this capacity:

  • Officer Daniel Lowes, Huntington Police Department
  • Officer Austin Johnson, Huntington Police Department
  • Captain Malcom Jones, Huntington County Sheriff’s Office

Each officer successfully graduated from D.A.R.E. instructor school which consisted of 80 hours of classroom and practical exercises.  This two-week training was funded by money seized from convicted drug dealers in our community!

Officers will be assigned to every elementary school in Huntington County.  They will visit each classroom (K-5) with their focus being on 5th grade students.

The D.A.R.E. program offers students the opportunity to gain a trustworthy adult friend, develop a positive attitude toward law enforcement personnel, and acquire greater respect for the law.

In order for this program to be successful, community donations are always appreciated!  If interested in donating to the program, please write checks to the Huntington Police Dept. (Memo: D.A.R.E.)  All donations will be used to purchase workbooks, pencils, t-shirts and other D.A.R.E. program supplies for the students!
