Chief Cory Boxell congratulates Sgt. Benjamin Spurgeon on his promotion.

HUNTINGTON – An emerging Huntington Police Department leader’s promotion to sergeant was made official during a ceremony Wednesday morning at the City Building.

Benjamin Spurgeon started his law enforcement career as an HPD reserve officer in 2009 and was hired full-time three years later. He has taken on increasing levels of responsibility, attaining status as both a Field Training Officer and Certified Instructor specializing in in four categories of police equipment and technology. Before Wednesday’s promotion, he also served as the second shift’s Officer-in-Charge when the captain and sergeant were off duty.

“Throughout Ben’s career, he has done whatever has been asked of him,” Huntington Police Chief Cory Boxell said. “He represents our department well, both on duty and off duty within our community. I’m proud to promote him to the rank of sergeant at the Huntington City Police Department.”

In remarks during the ceremony, Boxell also noted the new sergeant’s active involvement in the community. Spurgeon has served the past five years as Fraternal Order of Police president, and the two years prior as its vice president. He recently was named president of the Police Athletic League as well, which coordinates sports leagues for the more than 800 kids who participate.

Spurgeon took the Oath of Office on Wednesday morning with his wife, Brianna, by his side. They have been married 16 years and have two children. The family resides in Huntington.
