HUNTINGTON – The Huntington Fire Department has welcomed its newest firefighter, Austin Dantzer, whose experience as a volunteer firefighter inspired him to pursue a full-time career in emergency services.
“Austin joined the Roanoke Volunteer Fire Department in 2025 and quickly discovered a strong passion for the fire service,” Fire Chief Tony Johnson said. “Motivated by a deep commitment to his community and a desire to give back, he made the decision to pursue firefighting as a career.”
Dantzer has successfully completed the Fire Academy program, earning multiple Indiana firefighter certifications. He is on track to complete emergency medical technician training this June.
“Upon completion of his initial orientation, Austin will be well-prepared to make an immediate impact and contribute effectively to emergency responses,” Chief Johnson added.
Dantzer is a Fort Wayne native and Norwell High School graduate. He also attended Manchester College and graduated from Ball State University with a bachelor’s degree in finance. His wife, Jackie, and their daughter, Avery, were with him for Tuesday’s swearing-in ceremony at the Huntington Fire Department’s Etna Avenue station.
Two department veterans also received promotions on Tuesday.
Jason Meier – a 27-year member of HFD who has held the rank of Lieutenant since 2020 – was promoted to Battalion Chief.
“Jason has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to the department and has earned the trust and respect of the firefighters he serves alongside,” Chief Johnson said.
With 20 years of firefighting experience, Craig Martz was promoted to Lieutenant. Chief Johnson noted the pride the Martz already takes in teaching and instructing new firefighters.
“Craig has consistently mentored the new firefighters and shared his years of knowledge and experience, especially in the operation of the truck and equipment it carries,” Chief Johnson said.
