HUNTINGTON, Ind. – Gov. Mike Braun and Mayor Richard Strick joined executives of Hanjung America today to break ground in Huntington on its first U.S. manufacturing facility. The company, which is a subsidiary of South Korea-based Hanjung NCS, expects to begin operating in June 2027 with an initial workforce of more than 300.
“Huntington is proud to welcome a Hanjung America production facility to Riverfork West. Hanjung’s technology makes energy storage safer and more effective, two critical requirements to lowering energy costs for consumers throughout the grid,” Huntington Mayor Richard Strick said. “These are good-paying manufacturing jobs, and our workforce will demonstrate once again what makes Huntington a special community in the global economy.”
The company will launch operations in a newly constructed facility of more than 435,000 square feet. According to company spokesperson Birch Dalton, Hanjung America’s long-term plans include constructing multiple buildings on the 133-acre site it acquired at Riverfork West Industrial Park. Hanjung America expects full employment in Huntington to reach more than 440 jobs earning an average wage of more than $28 per hour.
The new facility is expected to have a significant impact on the local community and on the economy of Huntington, the northeast Indiana region and the state overall. Also in attendance at today’s groundbreaking were Indiana Lt. Governor Micah Beckwith; Indiana Secretary of Commerce David J. Adams; Rob Miller, president of the Huntington County Commissioners; Chris Martin, executive director of Huntington County United Economic Development; and Consul General Sangwoo Hong, Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Chicago.
“This is an exciting day for Hanjung America, for Huntington, and most importantly, for Hoosiers,” said Gov. Mike Braun. “Hanjung America’s decision to locate in Indiana is a testament to the skill and the commitment of our manufacturing workforce. This new facility will create hundreds of new high-paying jobs while supporting the continued growth of our energy storage and automotive sectors statewide.”
Once operational, employees at Hanjung America will produce high-performance energy storage system (ESS) components supporting the supply chain for Stellantis and Samsung SDI’s electric vehicle battery manufacturing operations in Kokomo, Ind., as well as the broader renewable energy sector across Indiana and the surrounding region.
“We are delighted to establish Hanjung America in Huntington and to become a member of the Indiana community, and we look forward to contributing to regional development,” said Kevin Kim, president of Hanjung America. “This new location allows us to better serve our local customers with our leading-edge technology ESS components.”
Hanjung’s technology includes cooling systems and direct-injection fire suppression systems for ESS containers – key safety components that improve the reliability and efficiency of energy storage and renewable energy systems.
Michael Kinder and Sons, Inc. (MKS), a fourth-generation design-build construction firm headquartered in Fort Wayne, Ind., was selected by Hanjung America to provide support services for site selection and serve as the design-builder for its new facilities.
"From the outset, a strong alignment in organizational values – centered on integrity, collaboration and long-term partnership – has been evident between MKS and Hanjung America," said Bill Kinder, chief executive officer at MKS. "Hanjung’s guiding principle, ‘No Future without Change,’ is particularly fitting for this partnership, as both organizations share a commitment to continuous improvement, innovation and delivering more efficient, forward-thinking solutions. MKS is honored to support Hanjung America’s first manufacturing facility in the United States."
The project received support from the state of Indiana and the city and county of Huntington, which approved a 10-year phase-in of Hanjung’s property tax obligations, as well as Indiana-based EdgeRock, which worked in tandem with MKS on the site selection process.
