The United Way of Huntington County and the local Health Department present a check to Erin Didion of United With Love on December 12, 2025.

The Huntington County community stepped up to support their neighbors in need amid November’s federal government shutdown, when many local families didn’t receive their usual SNAP food benefits.

“The suspension of SNAP benefits impacted nearly one in 16 Huntington County residents,” said Sarah Kemp, Executive Director of the United Way of Huntington County. “With the outcome of the government shutdown uncertain and the holidays quickly approaching, we knew immediate action was necessary.”

Working together, the United Way and county Health Department launched a campaign to raise donations, matching contributions dollar-for-dollar. Community donations and matching contributions to date total more than $5,200.

On December 12, Kemp presented a check to United With Love’s Erin Didion to distribute to five Huntington County food pantries to help meet local families’ ongoing needs. Public Health Nurse Annette Morton and Health Department Administrator Brian Trueblood also assisted with the check presentation.

Huntington County has an estimated 10 percent food insecurity rate, according to the local Health Department, and delayed SNAP benefits led to food pantries’ supplies being used faster as more families sought assistance.

“Donations are needed year-round, as many families continue to seek assistance,” Trueblood said. “Through December 31, donations collected are being matched the United Way and the Health Department to help resupply food pantries in Huntington County due to the increased need for assistance.”
