We’re having crews work in three locations on the Long-Term Control Plan to help meet the project’s 2026 deadline. The active worksites are on Tipton Street near the Oak, Poplar and Leopold intersections. Division Street has reopened to traffic. The temporary gravel surface is rough, so please remember to take it slow.
Each site has a full crew working on it, so combining efforts at a single location would not speed up progress. A crew will return to Division Street in the coming weeks to begin restoration work, starting with curbs and sidewalks. Restoration work is also slated to begin by early summer on portions of Tipton Street east of Byron Street and west of Poplar Street. The main pipework still in progress farther west on Tipton Street has to tie in at Byron Street before that intersection can be restored. This will likely happen this fall.
It’s important to know that we intend to avoid piecemeal repairs that would drive costs even higher. For the same reason, we’ll avoid resurfacing partially finished areas only to tear them up again soon after.
The Long-Term Control Plan is an extensive, federally mandated project to fix combined sewer overflows, a problem that has existed since the city's sewer system was built more than a century ago. These overflows can discharge into Flint Creek and the Little River during heavy rain or snowmelt. The plan will help prevent this, keeping the waterways cleaner and safer.
