Following April 8's public hearing and a first reading of the proposed water rate ordinance, City Council voted to advance a plan to build a new South Water Plant. Next, there will be a second reading and final vote at the April 29 Council meeting.
The South Plant, 66 years old and built in 1959, is near the end of its useful operational life. An extensive Preliminary Engineering Report prepared by the Lochmueller Group explored several alternatives for new construction, renovating existing facilities or even doing nothing. Based on their work, building new has been selected as the path forward.
The estimated cost to build a new South Plant is about $36 million. The proposal includes additional funds for the EPA’s nationwide lead service line replacement requirement. For an average household using 4,000 gallons of water, the Phase 1 impact of the proposed rate increase is about $6.12 per month.
