Architects from Shive-Hattery, the firm designing a potential new fire station on Flaxmill Road, provided a project update at May 13’s City Council meeting. The overview they provided included 3-D renderings and building schematics, projected construction costs, and general timelines for each step in the process.

To ensure City Utilities’ continued ability to provide safe and reliable water, City Council has approved a gradual water rate increase in response to aging well fields and a critical need to replace the South Water Plant.

There will be a need to install a temporary sewage bypass pump this week at the Jefferson and Market intersection. This will impact downtown traffic between Tuesday and Friday, weather permitting.

The active worksites are on Tipton Street near the Oak, Poplar and Leopold intersections. Division Street has reopened to traffic.

This smaller-scale project allows us to avoid impacting downtown with the most disruptive parts of Long-Term Control Plan construction. Please follow marked detours and expect work to take about a month, weather permitting.
City offices will be closed on April 18 for Good Friday. GFL’s trash and recycling schedules will not be affected.
Following April 8's public hearing and a first reading of the proposed water rate ordinance, City Council voted to advance a plan to build a new South Water Plant. Next, there will be a second reading and final vote on April 29.

The City of Huntington has announced a necessary proposal to increase water rates in response to aging well fields and a critical need to replace the South Water Plant, which was built in 1959 and is now 66 years old. This proposal follows an extensive review of the current system and is aimed at ensuring the continued delivery of safe, reliable and clean water to the community.
